# Rooms

> Create a temporary group chat and invite devices.

## Create or join

1. Sign in and create a room in **Rooms**.
2. Open the room. Its header shows **Code:** with buttons to copy the code or show it as a QR code.
3. Others enter the code and choose **Join**, or scan the QR with the button next to **Join**. No account is needed to join.

The code is a private invitation. It appears inside the open room, and only members can see it and the member list.

## Who can join

| Access | Joining |
| - | - |
| **Private** (default) | A device joining by code waits for the room owner's approval |
| **Protected** | Anyone with the code joins straight away |
| **Public** | Listed in everyone's Rooms list; anyone can join without a code |

The account that creates a room owns it. Any joined device signed into that account can approve requests and change access.

Join requests appear at the top of the owner's room chat, with **Approve** and **Decline** buttons. While you wait to join, your Rooms list shows **Waiting for approval**. Choose the trash icon to cancel your request. Disconnecting also cancels it.

To change access, choose the room's gear icon in **Rooms** on an owner's device. Switching from **Private** to **Protected** or **Public** admits waiting devices until the room is full. In **Settings**, enable **Approve who joins my rooms** to make new rooms Private, or disable it to make them Protected.

Each account can own **two active rooms**. Creating a third removes its oldest room and that room's pending server content.

## Send to the group

Open the room to chat, see its members, or send a file. Dropping a file on a room you have joined sends it to every member. Only devices signed into the owner's account see the room's **Via server** switch.

Content is end-to-end encrypted in both delivery modes:

| Room size | Delivery |
| - | - |
| Up to 6 members | Direct connections where possible, with server fallback |
| More than 6 members | Encrypted server relay; each file is uploaded once |

The default maximum is **20 members per room**. Devices marked **away** still count toward the member limit and delivery mode while their seats are held. Operators can change the member limit in the [configuration guide](/hosting/configuration#device-and-room-limits).

## Leave or reconnect

* A disconnected member appears **away** and keeps a seat for up to three hours by default.
* Choosing **Leave room** gives up the seat immediately.
* After a reload, rejoin from the same browser profile before your seat expires.
* A room ends when its last seat is released or expires. A server restart also removes rooms.

Returning members can recover history that others still hold. File entries may return without the file itself; **Gone** means no available copy remains.

Read the [transfer guide](/guides/transfers) for instructions on saving files and checking when server copies expire.
